SCORM explained

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) packages course content so it can be uploaded to any compatible LMS, which then tracks completion and scores. Newer standards include xAPI (Tin Can) and cmi5.

SCORM support matters if you buy off-the-shelf courses or build content in an authoring tool and want to move it between platforms.
